2019 Quarter 1 Stats

Quarter 1 of 2019 has come and gone. Time flies! This will be a long post with a lot of quantity number breakdowns, including full lists of every mold that I sold.

I’m not a large shop such as DGC or Infinite, but I feel like it’s a decent market view for smaller shops that can’t order thousands of discs at a time.

Companies that I carried in 2019 are as follows: MVP, Axiom, Streamline, Dynamic Discs, Latitude 64, Westside, Discmania, Innova, Discraft, Prodigy, Kastaplast, RPM, Mint Discs.

Note: RPM discs definitely does not get a good representation here because I have been unable to restock them this year.

DISTANCE DRIVERS

The list, in order of the most quantity sold:

Note: a little SNAFU on my part having the Insanity in the Distance Driver category when it’s listed as a speed 9. I tend to lean on speed 10 as the start of distance drivers. Whatever, it is what it is. I’ll change it for Q2.

Not really any big surprises here if you’ve been following the new releases this year. The Axiom Insanity was top of the list due to the PRISM release. The Discraft Kong would’ve definitely surpassed the Insanity if I was able to order more of those at the time. The Kong definitely became the fastest selling disc in our store. They launched at midnight and I had sold 70% by 8am. The rest only took a couple days to sell. The MVP Photon jumped up the list due to the long awaited restock of Fission plastic. The Destroyer is still holding it’s own, but definitely had a sharper decline over last year’s numbers

Here is a look at some charts for Distance Drivers. The first chart shows the percentage of distance drivers sold by company. The second chart shows the percent sold, but also adds in a red dot. The red dot represents the percentage of distance driver Molds offered by company that I also offer here in store. One correlation that I could make with the second chart is that some molds obviously do not sell well. I have to take a deeper look into the amount of molds that I offer in some companies. Discmania, Prodigy, Westside, and Latitude show that I carry a large amount of molds that did not sell well this quarter. I will get a better representation once the year goes on.

The Mint Alpha was the winner this quarter due to their restock of Sublime plastic. The Undertaker rode the McBeth wave all the up to number two. The rest of the chart is fairly common for the most part.

The Discraft Buzzz regains it’s number one position riding on the McBeth wave. The new midrange from Kastaplast, the Gote, came in second. The rest are pretty typical.

RPMN/A

This stat is one of the most important stats for me. It shows what’s hot, and what’s not. Obviously Innova came out as top seller this quarter, and every other quarter too. Flat out, they offer a ton of molds that sell decent enough to carry. The big mover on the list is obviously Discraft. They made a huge move picking up McBeth this year. That has directly translated into big sales here. Obviously, a ton of it was McBeth signature series discs, but I have seen a mild up-tick in other molds being purchased. I have sold more Discraft discs this quarter, than all of 2017 combined. I will probably surpass 2018 within a couple months.

As another corollary, the amount of searches and page views this quarter almost mirrors the percentage of discs sold. Searches and page views for anything Innova accounted for about 20%, Discraft 18%, MVP 14%, and so on down the list. The only anomaly was there were more searches for RPM than Streamline.

Total Molds Carried By Company

In theory, the more molds I carry, the more sales should be. We see in the graphs above that that isn’t always the case. This data definitely helps me make decisions on which molds to carry. In the past, I have always carried some of every single mold made. Nowadays that is impossible to do in a finite amount of space.

This chart shows the amount of molds offered by company that I choose to carry. The RPM numbers are way off due to me being unable to place an order so far this year.

Final Thoughts

It’s been a great first quarter, and I would like to thank all of my regulars and all of my new customers that help support the small guys.

Overall, Discraft was the big gainer this quarter for obvious reasons. We saw lots of McBeth signature stamps and possibly a renewed interest in the brand. Kudos to Discraft for ramping up! Just a couple years ago I pondered dropping them from my store. For a 4 year stretch they accounted for only about 5% of my sales. Then their marketing started going strong, came out with new discs, and of course signed McBeth. Very nice to see! Innova still holds the top spot here as expected, but I sold a lot less Destroyers than usual. MVP/Axiom are running strong like usual. Trilogy is holding their own, and the lower end companies are where they always are.

Thank you again everyone that shops online and stops by in-store. This job is a dream!
